What is the Right Length for Curtains?

What is the Right Length for Curtains?

Curtains are one of the single most popular window treatments available today, and while there are many decisions that go into selecting the right curtains for a room, one of the most important is the length. What is the best curtain length, and what’s going to make your house look great?

The Standards

Curtains come in a number of standard lengths you’ll likely want to consider unless you’re ordering custom curtains to fit your space. Most off-the-shelf options are 63 inches, 84 inches, 94 inches, 108 inches, or 120 inches in length. That doesn’t, however, mean you should only stick to those lengths if you’re going with a custom solution. Instead, those are just the most likely options to meet your needs.

In addition to the standard lengths, you’ll find for off-the-shelf styles, it may also help to understand the styles behind curtains. There are five major options there. Floor-length curtains sit about a half-inch above the floor. Sill-length curtains sit about a half-inch above the sill. You can also choose an option like apron length. These sit about an inch below the bottom of the window apron itself. There are two other styles to choose from as well. Trouser-length curtains are more than two inches longer than the length of the floor. Puddle-length curtains are more than six inches than the length of the floor.

Which One is Right For Me?

Now that you know the different standards, it’s time to learn a bit more about what curtain length fits best in your space. That starts with a measuring tape. Measure from the floor to where you’ll actually place your curtain rod. You’ll probably want to add a few inches to your measurements, as you can usually go as high as just a few inches from the ceilings if you want something a bit longer. Placing your curtain rod too low means not showing off the power of your windows.

Once you have a measurement to play with, you can begin thinking about the different standards in curtains. Floor-length curtains are easily the most popular, and for good reason. They help to make your window look longer and the room feel taller. They’re ideal in living rooms or family rooms.

Sill-length curtains tend to be very casual. You’ll want to use these in smaller windows or near furniture that might block the effect of longer curtains. Sill-length curtains tend to fit very well in kitchen and bathroom windows. Apron-length curtains aren’t quite as popular today as they have been in the past, but don’t write them off just yet. They’re easy to use, and you don’t have to worry about them picking up dirt and lint from the floor. They work really well in spaces where you have furniture that blocks the effect of full-length curtains. Keep in mind, though, they may certainly look like you chose curtains that were too short, so make this choice carefully.

The other two curtain length styles, trouser and puddle, are certainly to be considered as well. Trouser-length curtains, which are 2 inches more than the length of the floor, tend to look incredibly sophisticated. They’re absolutely ideal in a formal dining room where you want an added level of elegance. Puddle-length curtains add a new level of drama to the equation. Keep in mind that you don’t want to do this in a space where you regularly open and close the curtains. You probably also don’t want this length if you have pets or kids. You do want to go with puddle-length curtains if you’re looking to make a statement on tall windows.

Meet Classy and Beautiful Roman Shades!

Meet Classy and Beautiful Roman Shades!

If you’re looking for customized window treatments that truly fit your space, it may be time to consider custom Roman shades. What are Roman shades and why have they become such a popular choice in homes across the country? Understanding these unique shades is key to deciding whether they’re right for your home.

What are Roman Shades?

Roman shades are a soft window treatment made from fabric that hangs directly against your window when they’re completely down. When you decide to raise them, they hang at the top of the window in horizontal folds. While some of these come with a cord, many today are motorized, offering you an added level of convenience.

Roman shades get their unique look from the horizontal bars inside the fabric folds that create the folds themselves. Each bar has an eyelet with the cord on the opposite side of the shade to help draw it up.

There are two main kinds of Roman shades. The first is flat. They’re a single piece of fabric with those horizontal bars inside that fabric to help strengthen it. These tend to look great on shallow windows or doors. Soft fold Roman shades look a bit different. These have permanent folds in them when they’re open or closed, and they offer a classy, distinctive look that is incredibly popular today.

Where Would Roman Shades Look Great In Your Home?

Roman shades are incredibly versatile, so you can use them in almost any room. Because you can choose among a variety of fabrics, you can vary the amount of sunlight and how they fit with the room. With the right fabric, they can even offer you better energy efficiency, keeping out the heat of the sun and the fall and winter chill when necessary. If you plan to use them in damper spaces like the kitchen or the bathroom, though, make sure you choose the right fabric!

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Window Treatments

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Window Treatments

Soft window treatments, like fabric choices, can be a great window treatment option throughout your home, but selecting the right fabric is difficult. After all, it’s a crucial choice that sets the tone for the entire room. Whether you’re looking for an ornamental print that stands out to a gentle solid that will blend with everything else, getting the right fabric is a must, but the possibilities are endless. Where do you even begin?

Start With The Right Treatment

Many years ago, you had three choices in the world of window treatments – curtains, shades, or blinds. That’s no longer true. Today, those choices are somewhat muddled. You still have curtains, blinds, and shades, but you have fabric shades like Roman shades, motorized shades like Silhouette window treatments from Hunter Douglas that are covered in fabric, and traditional curtains and drapes among many other options. Often homeowners simply grab what might be easiest instead of what might look best, so your fabric choices should actually begin with the choice of the right window treatment. If you’re not sure what might work best in any given room of your home, consult a professional like the designers at Gallery of Shades to understand what’s going to be ideal in every room of your house.

Decide on Light Levels

Once you know what type of window treatment you want, the next step in finding the right fabric is to decide exactly how much light you want streaming in through your windows. If you’re looking for plenty of light, it’s best to go with a lightweight cotton or even a lace. If you need a bit more light control, you’ll want to go with something like a sateen. If you need complete light blocking power, something like a brocade is a better option.

Think Colors and Patterns

Once you know the ideal weight for your fabric, it’s time to think about the colors and patterns that might look good in every room. If you’re going for a complementary option, you want to go with a color that makes sense. You’ll either want to go with a monochromatic look (one that keeps the same color throughout) or one that flows with the options you’ve already chosen. If, though, you’re going for a contrasting look, you want something completely opposite that stands out. This is the same time that you’ll want to think about solid colors or prints. To answer this question, take a closer look at the furnishings in the room. If everything else is a solid color, a print might be the way to bring the room alive! If, though, you already have a fairly busy room, you may want to stick with a simple solid color.

Are Pleated Shades Right for Your Home?

Are Pleated Shades Right for Your Home?

Choosing the right window covering to meet your needs can be difficult thanks to the overwhelming number of choices you might have. Among them are pleated window shades and cellular shades, but what’s the difference between these two choices, and which one might look best in your home? This quick guide can help you tell the difference and find the perfect choice to meet your needs.

Understanding the Difference Between Pleated Shades and Cellular Shades

Both pleated and cellular shades are pretty similar, so if you’re not sure what sets them apart from each other, you’re not alone. These pleated shades for the home both have fairly thin, folded fabric. They both offer diffused light in any room. They also both offer you a much higher level of privacy than you might get with anything else. What makes them different, though, is that cellular shades are constructed in a more complex manner. Pleated shades are simply folded fabric. Cellular shades have a honeycomb construction to help trap air, which can help better insulate your windows. Cellular shades tend to be the energy-efficient shades of choice for many.

Should I Choose Pleated Shades or Cellular Shades?

While both types offer distinct advantages, pleated shades have a perfect place in your home as do cellular shades. Pleated shades tend to work best in living areas like your family room or even your dining room. They also work well in rooms that don’t get any direct sunlight or the heat from that sunlight during the warm summer months. Bathrooms are another great place for pleated shades, as they offer you a bit of natural light along with the privacy you need most.

Cellular shades, on the other hand, work well in rooms that struggle to heat and cool evenly as well as spaces that get the warm afternoon sunlight. Cellular shades can also offer you blackout-like conditions, so they’re ideal in bedrooms where you sometimes need that feature.

Are Motorized Blinds and Shades Right for Your Home?

Are Motorized Blinds and Shades Right for Your Home?

You’re on the search for the perfect window covering, right? Have you looked at custom motorized blinds like PowerView from Hunter Douglas? If they’re not even on your radar yet, it’s time to take a closer look at the power of custom motorized shades in your home. Check out these amazing benefits.

  • Better Safety Ratings: Whether you have children or pets you’re concerned about PowerView blinds really are the safer choice. They’re completely cordless, so you’ll never have to worry about anyone in your household getting tangled up in them.
  • Added Energy Efficiency: Motorized window blinds mean much higher energy efficiency ratings for two reasons. First, they offer a level of insulation some window coverings just can’t match. That helps to keep the heat out and the cool air conditioning in. More than that, though, they also offer you light control. Natural light means a chance to save on energy sometimes, which means switching off lamps and other light fixtures. You can even set your new blinds to open and close at specific points during the day to help maximize your energy efficiency.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Trying to fall asleep when it’s not quite dark outside is never fun. Neither is being awakened by an alarm instead of your body’s natural cycle. PowerView shades, though, give you the option to set a cycle for your bedroom window coverings. At night, set it to maximum light blocking to help make your bedroom as dark as it can be. Then set them to slowly introduce light as the sun comes up. It’s the perfect way to get the natural morning light you want without letting any additional light in at night.

Whether you love all of the features of smart home products or you just want to invest in something that helps make your window coverings a little smarter, PowerView shades are the ideal option. To learn more about the benefits or just see them in action, visit our showroom today!

Patio Shades are the Right Investment

Patio Shades are the Right Investment

You already have the perfect outdoor living space available. The problem? Phoenix experiences almost 300 days of bright, warm sunshine every single year, and that may make your outdoor living space almost unusable in the heat of the day. Fortunately, there is something you can do. Purchase shades for outdoor living areas! Why are outdoor patio shades the right option for your home? Take a look.

  • They control the temperature of your space. Outdoor space shades help to reduce the temperature of your patio by almost 20 degrees. That makes your patio the perfect place to cool off and relax, even on a hot, sunny day.
  • They block the glare. The perfect reason to invest in outdoor patio shades is that you can enjoy your space without the glare of the sun. Whether you want to take your laptop outside to work from the patio, you want to enjoy a good book, or you’d love to nap on your comfortable outdoor furniture, the glare from the sun can be a real problem at certain points of the day. The right outdoor patio shades, though, can quickly put a stop to that problem.
  • They offer added privacy. Have an outdoor living space that isn’t quite private enough for you? If your backyard faces a golf course or even a neighbor’s lot, you may want something a little more private, and outdoor patio shades do just that without really blocking your view. They’re ideal in settings where you wish your backyard wasn’t quite as open.

Do you think outdoor shades might be the right option to meet your needs? Reach out to us today. We can not only show you what we have available, but we’ll even help you decide on the right option to meet the needs of your outdoor living space. Book a visit to our showroom now!

color trends windows galleryofshades

While the design industry changes on a regular basis, no matter what those changes might be, the reality is that every new shift comes with a brand new palette of trending colors for your home. People are constantly looking for new colors that can help redesign their spaces, and often those new colors are infused with the latest window fashions. Ideal for contrasting other neutrals in your home, this is a fantastic choice when you’re looking to accent those beautiful windows and truly bring some light into your rooms and your life.

Cavern Clay

Searching for something bold, but not quite as loud as a vibrant yellow? Cavern clay is where it’s at this year. You might harken back to some of those 1960s colors if you look at this one, but it also has a desert touch that means an opportunity to be bold without using colors that blaze through your home. Ideal to accent a window in a room or two, this color may be a surprising choice for you.

Mushroom

Looking for something that’s not quite as bold? Mushroom is the color to consider. It’s a perfect accent when you need to mute things a bit, as might be the case in a bedroom or a bathroom. It’s a fairly trendy color that isn’t as dark as a pure brown but fits the earth tone style that you really want to infuse throughout your home. bedroom window treatment

Did you know that nearly 30% of adults suffer from chronic insomnia? While there are lots of factors that help produce a better night’s sleep, one of them is the amount of light coming into your bedroom as you snooze. Artificial light, like that coming from streetlights, neighbors’ houses, or nearby businesses, can actually interfere with your sleep. Your body, even when you’re asleep, is able to register the light and trigger your body that it’s time to wake up. Light interference when you’re sleeping not only means you may not sleep as well, but it could also have some pretty serious health consequences. It’s what makes selecting the right bedroom window treatments so important? But what works best and how will you make sense of what might be right for your body? This quick guide can help.

Options for the Best Window Treatments for Bedrooms

You want your bedroom to look beautiful, and the good news is that even if you choose blackout curtains to make sure you’ll get the least possible amount of light, it will still look amazing. Here are a few options to consider for your space.

  • Roman Shades: Offering an elegance many other window treatments simply can’t match, these never go out of style. They’re available in a number of different patterns and colors, so no matter what your bedroom décor looks like, they’re certain to match. With a thicker fabric, you’ll find an excellent level of darkness as you sleep, but even if you want to go with a lighter choice, you can always add a blackout liner to the equation.
  • Roller Shades: You may think these antiques are relegated to your grandmother’s house, but the simple reality is that roller shades remain a classic for a good reason. Today’s roller shades come in a number of different patterns and styles, and you can get options that completely block the light so you can sleep well.
  • Vertical Blinds: These probably aren’t your first option when you’re looking for light blocking power, but if you have lots of window space to cover, they may be your best option. They’re ideal for wide windows or that door that you have in your bedroom that opens onto the patio. They’re easy to clean, and they come in a number of different styles. Wider slats mean less light coming into your bedroom too!

Not sure what might be right in your bedroom? We’d love to help. Contact us today to learn more about our options when it comes to keeping your bedroom a bit darker at night.

Consider These Tips Before You Buy Curtains for the Baby’s Room!

Decorating a baby’s room can be complex. There’s so much to consider, and so many different options out there. Among the choice to be made are the window treatments you’ll use in the baby’s room, and while you’ll certainly want to consider aesthetics, there are several other aspects to factor in as well.

  • Think Safety: The single most important thing to consider as you think about nursery curtains and other window treatment options is the safety factor. Window treatments can be dangerous for small children if chose incorrectly. You’ll want to select a cordless option if at all possible, or at least one that’s already been childproofed. Additionally, you’ll want to choose something that’s out of the little one’s way. Floor-length draperies have no place in the baby’s room.
  • Think Light Control: Your little one will do quite a bit of sleeping those first few years, and you can help make that happen with the right nursery shades. Consider a blackout option to help your little one sleep a bit longer and better regulate the temperature of your nursery space.
  • Think Colors: Once you’ve addressed those first two concerns, it’s time to have a bit of fun. Custom baby’s room curtains are a great way to add a little bit of color to your nursery space. Think about patterns and colors that will coordinate with the other options in the room, and if you’re just using something like Roman shades in the room to keep things simple, you’ll certainly want to add a valance for that touch of color. Just remember to select options that work well with your theme.

If you’re looking for a bit of help and advice as you’re selecting curtains or other window treatments for the baby’s room, don’t hesitate to contact us. With an extensive showroom and knowledgeable design specialists on staff, we’ll be happy to connect you with the perfect window treatment for your baby’s room!

The Best Blinds and Shades For Your Patio Doors!

The Best Blinds and Shades For Your Patio Doors!

If you have doors that need blinds or shades, it can be a little overwhelming to decide exactly what you want and what will look great in your space. After all, there are several things to consider like how they’ll fit with the door handle, privacy, and light control concerns. What are your options and what might look great? Here are a few ideas that might help.

Shades for Patio Doors and Sliding Doors

There are lots of good options for patio door shades, as well as sliding door shades. From cellular shades that come in a variety of fabrics while offering the ability to block light in one slim fit package to Roman shades that mean a flat construction, with shades, you’ll find some amazing choices. Keep in mind that you may want an outside mount, though, and if you use your sliding door on a regular basis, you’ll want something that cleans really easily.

Blinds for Patio Doors and Sliding Doors

Patio door blinds and sliding glass doors are also a good choice. They offer you lots of natural light and some measure of privacy. More than that, though, is the fact that they won’t block your amazing view. Keep in mind that you’ll likely want a window treatment choice that opens vertically, in the same direction as the door. You may also want a durable window treatment given all of the use your sliding glass doors get. If you feel stuck with sliding door blind options like vertical blinds given those conditions, though, don’t. Instead, you may also want to consider a number of other options that can cover wider windows like motorized sliding panels or even custom curtains or drapes.

French Glass Door Options

If you’re looking for glass door blinds, you might find one of the biggest problems with French doors is that the handles tend to get in the way of the way the blinds work. Remember, you want something that enhances the beauty of the doors and matches any other window treatments you have in the room, so if you believe blinds make the best possible choice here, select something that fits comfortably between the door itself and the door’s hardware. As with other doors, your options here aren’t limited to blinds. Instead, you can also choose other options like blackout shades or even honeycomb shades to help enhance energy efficiency.

There are lots of great choices when it comes to window treatments for doors. To learn more about what might look great, make an appointment to visit our showroom now.
